26 Bridges – The Rise of the Traffic Bridge

I’ll admit that this is a delayed post.  Saskatoon’s new traffic bridge is set to officially open tomorrow (October 2, 2018).  These photos have been on my hard drive for far too long as they are from a trip to the river to document building the bridge during a -40 celcius morning on February 7,Continue reading “26 Bridges – The Rise of the Traffic Bridge”

26 bridges – Gordie Howe and Grand Trunk Rail Bridge

In August of 2017 I took an evening trip out to the old Grand Trunk rail bridge and new Gordie Howe South Circle Drive bridges for some sunset photos.  The night was calm so there was not a ripple on the river.  A beautiful Saskatchewan summer night.  It made for a good evening of photos.Continue reading “26 bridges – Gordie Howe and Grand Trunk Rail Bridge”

26 Bridges – Winter on the Old CPR Rail Bridge

I have not forgotten about the bridge project, but I have had a little break from it because of a busy schedule.  I did make it out again last week to do some photos at the old CPR rail bridge.  It was a chilly day with wind chill below -30c, but there was hoar frostContinue reading “26 Bridges – Winter on the Old CPR Rail Bridge”

Moka – prints on display

I am pleased to share that I now have some prints on display and for sale at Moka coffee bar.  Moka is located at 411i Herold Ct in Saskatoon (off Boychuck between the Yellowhead and Taylor Street).  These photos will be on display there until the end of October 2016. When picking photos to display IContinue reading “Moka – prints on display”

New Prints – “february 7th, 2016”

This is actually a series of three new prints that I have done up from demolition day for the fourth span of Saskatoon’s Victoria traffic bridge.  I wanted to present these as a series in time to try and convey the suddenness of the explosive demolition, and to focus on that I have titled eachContinue reading “New Prints – “february 7th, 2016””

New print – “frosted”

I have been working on making some new prints, some of them from older images.  Continuing on that theme, I have recently revisited this older photo of the Victoria traffic bridge from February 12th, 2010.  The bridge was intact and functional at the time, and the hoar frost that morning was absolutely beautiful. The FrostedContinue reading “New print – “frosted””

New print – “crossings”

This new print is actually an old picture.  I’m compiling a series of Victoria traffic bridge photos to display at Moka in September.  This one is from when it was intact, and still open to traffic.  It’s a longer exposure photo from December 20, 2009.  Those expensive lights on the bridge are nicely lit upContinue reading “New print – “crossings””

New print “last span standing” – the end of the Victoria Traffic Bridge

The Victoria traffic bridge in Saskatoon was an elegant landmark.  Opened in 1907, it has been a big part of Saskatoon ever since.  I personally loved this bridge, including it’s character and too-narrow roadway.  But, it became corroded and unsafe so demolition was needed.  Today this is the last span standing. This picture was takenContinue reading “New print “last span standing” – the end of the Victoria Traffic Bridge”

New print “load limit”

I’ve been working on putting together new prints of the Victoria Bridge.  In September I have the opportunity to hang these photos as Moka coffee bar in Saskatoon, and I wanted to focus on the old steel bridge.  These will be a collection of shots ranging from 2009 to present, with the bridge in variousContinue reading “New print “load limit””

26 bridges – Circle Drive North

My bridges project continues, and this time it was a little trip to the Circle Drive North Bridge.  A concrete girder bridge at the north end of the city. It was built with two lanes and a walkway on each span, but was later modified to incorporate the pedestrian walkways into traffic lanes and suspend aContinue reading “26 bridges – Circle Drive North”

26 Bridges – Circle drive south and the Grand Trunk Rail bridge

I made it out for another photo shoot on the self-imposed 26 bridges project, taking portraits of Saskatoon’s bridges.  This time it was to the Circle Drive South Bridge (recently renamed the Gordie Howe Bridge) and the old Saskatoon Grand Trunk rail bridge.  My goal was a sunset photo of both of the bridges, butContinue reading “26 Bridges – Circle drive south and the Grand Trunk Rail bridge”

26 bridges “rail bridge birds”

The second photo outing of my bridges project yielded four photos that I was quite happy with.  I combined this outing with a compositional goal of using triangles in the photos.  The bridge that I focused on was the old CPR rail bridge.  There were more birds than people out, so they became a secondaryContinue reading “26 bridges “rail bridge birds””

26 bridges – further demolition of the old traffic bridge

And then there was one. Another segment of the traffic bridge in Saskatoon was brought down by explosives today. It was built in 1907 and originally had 5 spans of iron truss bridge. Today only one span remains in place. I will miss this piece of history and hope that the city replaces it withContinue reading “26 bridges – further demolition of the old traffic bridge”
