Last year the Remai Modern Art gallery opened in Saskatoon. It’s an amazing building, with really cool architectural lines. When I took a trip down to river landing just before labor day I was uncertain if I would taking photos of the Remai or the bridges. Turned out that my favorite shot was one of both the Remai and the end of the Idylwylde (Sid Buckwold) bridge.
This is from what is likely the museum’s less photographed side, but the geometry of the windows and metal wall cladding was too much to walk by. I wanted to include those amazing cloud and bridge reflections in the shot to soften the hard lines. So, I took a straight on view positioning the windows just to the left of centre frame so I would not be in the reflection. A minor crop would put the junction of the windows back in centre frame during processing.
I then waited for a few minutes trying to get an interesting reflection on the bridge. This meant listening for the sounds of cars to know when they would be coming. When I heard the motorcycle coming, then saw no other vehicles on the bridge in the viewfinder I knew I had my shot.
The moment I processed the shot I loved it. So I happily posted it on Flickr musing if it counts as a bridge shot. A couple of my flickr friends (thank you Karen and Stefanie) suggested a crop to emphasize the bridge and motorcycle. The end result is below and gives a better view of the bridge, as well as a more interesting composition to those window lines and reflections that grabbed my attention in the first place.
So in the end of the day I am calling it a bridge shot, and adding it to the 26 bridges project.
